One year ago today I woke up with a start from my bed on the living room floor of Mike Skon’s Irvine apartment, dreaming that I had just been in a large, sudden explosion. The boom, the noise, the feeling was so real that I stood up and looked out the windows, and from up on the hill, saw that everything in Orange County was still peaceful at 3 in the morning.
It took me awhile to fall back to sleep. I couldn’t get the feeling or the urgency of the moment out of my head. I said a small prayer, thinking that something might be happening somewhere. Several hours later I awoke again, the morning light casting a warm glow in the room. I made my way to Mike’s computer and read this entry on Zach Lind’s blog.
I then turned on CNN and a few minutes later, Mike and I sat there, not believing what has striken the City of London. Later in the day I emailed my friend Simon from Brighton, whom I met at the Fort Mason Hostel the week before in San Francisco. I remember he said he had family in downtown London. His family was okay, but one of their neighbors had been critically wounded on the Underground.
May our hearts and prayers go out to the people of London; while the city is resilient and has faced much worst, there are families who grieve today for what is lost.
