Next week, to celebrate Independence Day, I am going to begin taking classes at a Japanese market in downtown Phoenix on how to make proper sushi. I would love to eat tuna and salmon sashimi, unagi, rainbow rolls, and squid salad everyday to be quite honest, but the prohibitive price of a daily sushi diet (and as discovered last week, the problem of locating a decent sushi luncheon place in south central) has not made it possible. So yes, I shall take classes and shop at the market often, buying sushi-grade fish sold by the Japanese for the exact purpose of sushi, buy my rolling mat from Cost Plus, and be on my way.

I don’t think it should be that difficult really … the important part is only buying FRESH saltwater fish, which is hard enough in Az. I’ll keep you posted on what I learn!

Congrats Jeff on becoming a sushi-chef expert. Luckily, I have my own teacher living with me
This is one of the perks of marrying a Japanese girl. Hee hee. All you need is some rice vinegar, nori (seaweed), and some fish or vegetables. Poor man’s sushi can be simply rice, cucumbers, egg, and avacado. Good stuff and cheap!
I hope you have some fun making some tasty and healthy food.

I would love to know where this Japanese market is in Phoenix. I want to make a stab at doing my own sushi (maybe take a class) and then have a sushi party when the weather cools! We did find a place next to Zen 32 (Camelback & 32nd St) that has fresh Alaskan fish.

Have you tried the Chinese Cultural center which has a variety of oriental supermarkets and restaurants?
